#honorary #frcs #glasgow 11 September 2025 Historic first: Youngest South Asian surgeon conferred Honorary FRCS by RCPSG, Glasgow Highest Honour bestowed by one of the oldest and the only Multidisciplinary College in the British Isles Dr. Raghu Ram Pillarisetti, Founding Director of the KIMS-USHALAKSHMI Centre for Breast Diseases, Hyderabad, has achieved the rare distinction of becoming the youngest surgeon from South Asia to be conferred the Honorary FRCS (Glasgow) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG). Having earned FRCS (Glasgow) by examination in 1997, Dr. Pillarisetti now holds the unique honour of being both an FRCS (by examination) and an Honorary Fellow of the same College. This highest honour, from the 425-year-old College, was formally bestowed upon Dr. Raghu Ram by Prof. Hany Etiba, President of RCPSG, at a glittering ceremony held in the historic College Hall in Glasgow on 10 September 2025, which was followed by a formal sit down Dinner to celebrate the conferment of Honorary Fellowship. Addressing the Guests, Professor Hany Etiba, President, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow said “I am delighted to confer upon Dr Pillarisetti the Honorary Fellowship, which is the most prestigious and highest honour bestowed by the College For over two decades, he has dedicated himself to his community, bringing hope to millions of people in the fight against breast cancer. By fostering close links with surgeons in the UK, India and worldwide, he has been integral to our mission of advancing health and professional standards in surgery. We are immensely proud to welcome him into our College community and look forward to strengthening the bond between the UK and India.” The Citation read out by Prof. Abhay Rane, Registrar and Trustee of the RCPSG paid glowing tribute to Dr. Raghu Ram’s transformative contributions to breast cancer care in India over nearly two decades, his pioneering role in convening 12 overseas FRCS/MRCS preparatory courses in Hyderabad that enabled over 2,000 trainees from across South Asia to succeed in the prestigious examinations, and his strategic guidance to the College’s academic initiatives in India. Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Raghu Ram Pillarisetti said: “I am deeply grateful to the President of RCPSG for conferring this highest honour, and I dedicate this singular recognition to my family, my patients, and my motherland.” Founded in 1599, RCPSG is over 425 years old and is the only multidisciplinary Royal College in the British Isles that represents a diverse community of over 15, 000 Surgeons, Dentists & Professionals working in podiatry and travel medicine from across 97 Countries around the world. The President later bestowed prestigious “MRCS” & “FRCS”, which are globally recognised to doctors who have passed the Intercollegiate Examination upon completion of their training requirements. Some of the prominent Surgeons who were closely associated with this historic College include Prof. Peter Low – the founder of RCPSG, who published the first Surgical textbook in English (1597), Sir William Macewan - “father of Neuro Surgery’ credited to have removed the first brain tumour, Prof. Joseph lister – father of antiseptic surgery, Prof. Sir, Greame Teasdale, former president of the College & Prof. Bryan Bennet - both of whom founded the Glasgow Coma Scale, which is widely used tool worldwide to assess the level of consciousness and indeed Prof. Jamini Sen – an Indian Surgeon and the first female Fellow of the College (1912).

"Gyan Pravah"(Stream of Knowledge*) is a podcast series championed by FOGSI (Federation of Obstetric & Gynecological Societies of India), which has been providing enriching content to FOGSI members, Medical fraternity and the Community at large. The podcast features a variety of topics relating to women's health, with a dedicated episode each month. Dr P. Raghu Ram was invited to participate in this month's episode "Changing the Face of Breast Cancer Care in India" For many women presenting with Breast Health issues, the Gynecologist is the first port of call. And therefore, during the course of the interview, Dr Raghu Ram emphasised the need for Association of Breast Surgeons of India (ABSI) to work closely with FOGSI to empower Gynecologists across Bharat about various aspects of breast disease - "what to do" and more importantly, "what not to do" and "when to refer" - all of which goes a long way at ensuring women get best possible breast health care.

First ever Surgeons' Week  (9 -15 June 2025) Dr Raghu Ram, a former President of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI), which is the world's second largest Surgical organisation participated in the first ever SURGEONS DAY celebrations that were held in Aurangabad on 15 June 2025. The Surgeon's Week (9-15 June) culminating in Surgeons' Day was conceived and organised under the Leadership of Dr Pravin Suryawanshi, President ASI for the year 2025. Several thoughtful, innovative and landmark initiatives were launched by ASI during the Week, which attracted national attention and appreciation.

Hon’ble Governor of Telangana inaugurated a Breast Cancer awareness Programme at Brahma Kumaris Headquarters in Hyderabad Rich tributes paid by Hon’ble Governor to Dr Raghu Ram for his innovative initiatives over past 18 years to create the much needed awareness about importance of Early Detection of Breast Cancer Kuldeep Didi, In charge for Brahma Kumaris Hyderabad region & Breast Cancer ‘Conqueror” narrates her experience in the fight against breast cancer Shri Jishnu Dev Varma, Hon’ble Governor of Telangana inaugurated a large scale Breast Cancer awareness Programme titled “ABCs of Breast Cancer – What every woman must know” at Shanti Sarovar – Brahma Kumaris Headquarters in Hyderabad. Addressing close to 1000 people who attended this Programme, the Hon’ble Governor said “I am very happy to note that three months ago, Dr Raghu Ram has secured two Guinness world records (onsite and online) for conducting the “Largest Breast Cancer Awareness lesson” at Brahma Kumaris World Headquarters in Mount Abu in March 2025. And today, he has replicated this awareness Lesson at Shanti Sarovar in Hyderabad. I appreciate Dr Raghu Ram, who has been illuminating the Telangana Raj Bhavan in Pink during the International Breast Cancer awareness month (October) since 5 years in an earnest endevour to empower people about the importance of early detection, and equally, give confidence to those fighting the disease. To do this even during the peak of COVID pandemic speaks volumes about his passion, determination and commitment to breast cancer advocacy. I commend him for his pioneering work of spearheading several landmark initiatives over the past 18 years that have transformed breast cancer care in India and wish him continued success in his noble mission, which will go a long way in saving scores of lives through Early Detection”. Dr Raghu Ram demystified some of the common myths associated with breast cancer with evidence based facts and emphasised that there are only two ways to detect breast cancer in early stages. He said “Firstly, women of all ages must be “Breast aware” and report to the Specialist without delay if they notice any new changes in the breasts. Secondly, women over the age of 40 must have an annual screening mammogram. Early detection has a potential to save scores of lives.” Dr Raghu Ram concluded with a powerful message that resonated with the audience. He said “We must not forget that a Woman is the Nerve Centre for the family. If she is well, the family would be well. It is the bounden duty of men to take care of the healthcare needs of your loved ones. Instead of gifting or in addition to gifting a saree during festivals, please do consider gifting an annual screening mammogram to your mother, spouse, grandmother & sister. This mindset would undoubtedly translate to saving many lives through Early Detection”. Sharing her own journey of fighting breast cancer, BK, Kuldeep didi, In Charge for Brahma Kumaris Centre for Hyderabad & Breast Cancer “Conqueror” said “ It has been my greatest fortune to be treated by Dr Raghu Ram. In my own tryst with breast cancer, I managed to emerge strong and successful because of the extraordinary quality of treatment, empathetic care and counselling provided by him throughout the period of my treatment. emerged a ‘conqueror’. It is immensely satisfying that in my journey, Dr Raghu Ram inspired me to stay positive and remain undeterred whilst dealing with this unwelcome visitor. I appreciate Dr Raghu Ram for staying focused in spreading the message of hope and creating the much-needed awareness about early detection for a decade and beyond.” Later, pictures were taken with the Hon’ble Governor proudly showcasing the two Guinness World Records that were achieved by Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation, KIMS-USHALAKSHMI Centre for Breast Diseases and Brahma Kumaris for conducting the “Largest Breast Cancer awareness Lesson” in March 2025 at Brahma Kuma Kumaris World Headquarters in Mount Abu.

Surgeon's Week 2025 - Breast Cancer awareness with Shriya Saran
Dr Raghu Ram achieved the rare distinction to become the First ever recipient of “Distinguished Alumnus Award” in the 70 years history of KMC, Mangalore Dr.P. Raghu Ram, Founding Director of KIMS-USHALAKSHMI Centre for Breast Diseases in Hyderabad achieved the rare distinction to become the First alumnus to be conferred of the “Distinguished Alumnus Award” in the 70 years history of Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. The singlular recognition was bestowed upon Dr Raghu Ram on 6 June 2025 by Prof. H.S. Ballal, Pro Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) during the Platinum Jubilee College Day celebrations held at TMA Pai International Convention Centre in Mangalore, where Dr Raghu Ram was also invited as the Chief Guest. Paying glorious tributes, Prof. H.S. Ballal, Pro Chancellor, MAHE said “ Dr Raghu Ram is a very accomplished & highly valued alumnus of KMC Mangalore and we at MAHE are very proud of his outstanding contribution to Breast Cancer Care in India and life transforming philanthropy in his adopted village, which has resulted in him being conferred with the Padma Award, Dr B.C. Roy National award & Officer of the Most Excellent Order of British Empire (OBE) at a very young age. It is in recognition of these exceptional achievements by our Alumnus that KMC Mangalore has felicitated him for the very first time in its history with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. I wish him continued success and much more service to mankind”. Delivering his Chief Guest’s address, Dr Raghu Ram said “ It is well and truly a humbling experience to become the first ever recipient the Distinguished Alumnus Award and for it to be bestowed upon me during the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of my Alma Mater. It is also a pleasant coincidence that precisely 30 years ago, in June 1995, I had obtained First Place in MS University Examinations from KMC Mangalore. This was my First turning point in Life, and there was no looking back thereafter. My heartfelt gratitude to my teachers. I shall treasure this recognition and dedicate this Award to both my parents, who recently left this world. Without them, I’m a nobody” Dr Raghu Ram shared his 9 Life transforming Messages in the form of “Sutras” - personal guidelines and principles that stood by him in his Life’s journey. He empahsised the importance of valuing and safeguarding the Trust that patients place in Doctors and underscored the importance of being ethical not just in practicing the art and science of Medicine, but also in all aspects of life. He alluded to the importance of being a good human first, which is of more value than any measure of success that one can attain. He cautioned the younger generation to not get sucked into the never ending “Rat Race” of private practice, which results in enormous stress and burn out at a young age with detrimental effect on the well-being of the individual and family. In his closing remarks, he outlined his fulfilling experience of having adopted a remote village in Telangana and made an inspiring appeal to the younger generation to also adopt a village in addition of contributing towards improving Medical care in our motherland. He said that there are 6 lakh villages in the Country. If 6 lakh citizenry adopt one village each and spend part of their time, energy and resources in this endeavor, then the upcoming 25 years of #Amritkaal would go a long way in fulfilling the dreams, goals and aspirations of countless lives in rural India where more than 70% of India’s population reside. Dr Raghu Ram presented the Certificate of appreciation and Gold medals to the various Award Recipients, which included Undergraduate and Postgraduate students and faculty at KMC Mangalore for the year 2024. The highlight of the Award ceremony included presentation of TMA Pai Gold Medal to Dr Janet Joy, the Best outgoing MBBS student of KMC Mangalore for the year 2024.
